Her Honour Lenore Berscheid, B.A., M.ED., M.M.F.T.
Wife of the Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba

Her Honour was born in Winnipeg. Her childhood was spent in Bissett, a mining town in the Canadian Shield north of Winnipeg. She was the eldest of seven children. Professionally, she spent seven years as a classroom teacher, then worked as a school counsellor in Winnipeg for seventeen years. She now works part time as a counsellor in downtown Winnipeg, and as a report writer at Youth Corrections. Her official role includes hosting and attending functions with His Honour, in Winnipeg and elsewhere in Manitoba, and participating in His Honour’s special projects and the running of Government House.

Her Honour has a Bachelor of Arts degree (1975), and a Master of Education degree (MEd) (1991) from the University of Manitoba, as well as a Master of Marriage and Family Therapy degree (MMFT) (2006) from the University of Winnipeg. She is interested in human development and its interferences: addictions, mental health problems, autism spectrum and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, and trauma.

Volunteer work for Her Honour includes coaching English conversation with two refugee women from Iraq and Liberia. She is honorary patron of the Provincial Council of Women of Manitoba, the Winnipeg Council of Women, Girl Guides, and the Jon Sigurdson Chapter of IODE. She is on the steering committee for a study into development of a Manitoba centre for assessment of adults with FASD. She advocates with His Honour for children, youth, and adults who need accommodation in schools and communities because of problems in development or mental health.

Her Honour enjoys living at Government House and hosting events. She also loves walking her cats in the gardens, chatting with neighbours and staff, and reading books on a quiet day. She has worked with staff to provide a state of the art environment for turtles in the Government House greenhouse. She is currently delving into plans for renovation of a home in downtown Winnipeg, in preparation for the end of His Honour’s term in 2009.
