Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba
Come and Go Tea 125th Anniversary of RM of St. Andrews
Municipal Office, 500 Railway Ave., Clandeboye
Monday, February 14, 2005 - 2:30 p.m.
Councillors, committee members, friends and fellow Manitobans, it's a delight to be here to help you
mark the 125th anniversary of the establishment of the Rural Municipality of St. Andrews.
As Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba, I encourage all the citizens of this province to explore and
celebrate our heritage. That goes double for a place like the Rural Municipality of St. Andrews, where
your local heritage is such an important part of the story of Manitoba.
From St. Andrew's Church – the oldest still-used stone church in Western Canada – to the stone fort
of Lower Fort Garry, this is an area rich in history. Here's where the Hudson Bay Company administered
their vast western empire and where Treaty Number One was signed.
And of course, the story of Manitoba continues here today with new housing, commercial and industrial
growth fueling the economy of a dynamic municipality.
This is also an area many Manitobans know well from trips to the beaches of Lake Winnipeg, fishing
expeditions to Netley Creek, outings to Oak Hammock Marsh or scenic Sunday drives along the Red River.
That will be another wonderful way for this thriving and growing municipality
to celebrate 125 years of contributing to a great province in a great
country.
Happy 125th anniversary, Rural Municipality of St. Andrews.
Thank you.
