Remarks by
The Honourable John Harvard, P.C., O.M.
Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba

Aurora Family Therapy Centre

Government House
Thursday, January 27, 2005 - 5:00 p.m.

I am really happy to welcome you here tonight, especially Dr. Axworthy, President of the University of Winnipeg; Marilyn Boyd, Director of Aurora Family Therapy Centre, Minister Sale, Representative of the Manitoba Government, Joanne Wirtanen, Chair of the Board and Betty Black, chair of the Board of the United Way.

The occasion of course, is the official announcement of the change of name of Interfaith Marriage and Family Institute to Aurora Family Therapy Centre. It is a change designed to present an inclusive and modern face to the community on the part of an established service. From my point of view, I am happy to call this a celebration of 33 years of dedicated service to individuals, couples, and families.

From its inception as an adjunct to pastoral care to its current state as a mostly secular therapy service, Aurora Family Therapy Centre has led the way in training systems-oriented therapists in Manitoba. Its staff and students have worked successfully to obtain funding from United Way and other sources, so that poor and middle class families, couples, and individuals can obtain help for their relationship difficulties, paying on an affordable sliding fee scale. It is this dedication to direct service and training that we are celebrating tonight, as we toast the new name, Aurora Family Therapy Centre.

I cannot think of a more worthy pursuit than supporting couples, families, and individuals. In times of grief and loss, during normal life cycle transitions and crises, we as a community reach out to support our members. Sometimes we do this as friends and family. Sometimes professional help is called for. That culture of support, and the expertise in the field instilled by professional training within the University of Winnipeg, are to be cherished by all of us.

Congratulations to the staff, board, donors, graduates, and students at Aurora Family Therapy Centre for your dedication to studies and for the service you perform. Congratulations to the founders of the training program and to the University of Winnipeg and the United Way for maintaining it over the years for the benefit of Manitobans. Energized by your new name, may you prosper.

Thank you for your service to Manitobans.
