LIEUTENANT-GOVERNOR
TO PRESENT AWARD FOR ADVANCEMENT OF INTER-RELIGIOUS UNDERSTANDING TO TWO RECIPIENTS

Lt.-Gov. Philip S. Lee will present awards to two Manitobans for their work in promoting inter religious understanding at a ceremony at Government House at 5 p.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, Jan. 10.

Honoured at the ceremony will be Mae Louise Campbell, an Ojibway Métis elder, lodge keeper and spiritual/cultural leader who serves the large number of Aboriginal people who live in the inner city of Winnipeg.

Also being recognized will be Dr. Atish Chandra Maniar, a Hindu priest since 1991. Maniar preaches the basic philosophy of non-violence of Hinduism. His mission is to spread the principle of non-violence in the world so that there is less terrorism.

The Lieutenant-governor’s Award for the Advancement of Inter-religious Understanding is presented each year at a ceremony at Government House to an individual, and with exception to two individuals, who best embodies understanding between all religious groups.

“In a province such as Manitoba where we embrace multiculturalism, it is particularly important that we seek wisdom by being open to the ways that others ask the fundamental questions of life, death and meaning,” said Lee. “As the province where so much of the Canadian idea of multiculturalism was formed, Manitoba is a natural setting for the growth of understanding among people of different faiths.”
